The Serra dos Ancares in Lugo is located to the extreme west of the Cantabrian Mountain range, and is a continuation of the neighbouring comarca (lit. local administrative region) of Ancares de Leon. Lugo’s region of the Ancares has a particularly low population density (8.3 inhabitants/km2), which is also very elderly, and located in widespread, small rural settlements, which are mainly dedicated to cattle farming activities, in very small herds. The forestry sector is less significant, yet on the increase, as is the case of rural tourism, which is rapidly gaining importance for the economy of the local area.
